Second round of snap presidential elections held in Iran

Iran Prepares for Second Presidential Elections After Tragic Plane Crash: What to Expect

The Islamic Republic of Iran will hold the second round of early presidential elections on July 5th, following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19th. In the first round held on June 28th, Masoud Pezeshkian, considered a reformer, and conservative Said Jalili emerged as the top candidates. Pezeshkian received about 42% of the votes while Jalili received about 39%.

Officially, the voter turnout for the first round was reported as 40%, but there are doubts about its accuracy, with some suggesting it could have been much lower. The conservative candidate has a better chance in the second round, as voters who supported other conservative politicians in the first round have no alternative. The voter turnout for the second round will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

While Iran’s president is formally the head of state, the country is effectively ruled by its Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The outcome of these elections will have significant implications for Iran’s future direction.
