Iowa’s Best Math and Science Teachers Shine in National Recognition Program

Susan Wenger and Brenda Kaufmann, two outstanding educators from Iowa, have been named finalists in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching by the Iowa Department of Education.

Wenger teaches at Valley Elementary School in Elgin and is a finalist for PAEMST Mathematics. Kaufmann, on the other hand, teaches second grade at North Tama Elementary School in Traer and is the district’s STEM coordinator. She is a finalist for PAEMST Science.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is a prestigious recognition program that honors kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science. Each year, up to 110 teachers are recognized alternating between elementary and secondary teachers. Since its establishment in 1983, over 5,200 teachers from all 50 states, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and six U.S. jurisdictions have been honored through this program.

Award recipients are chosen based on their exceptional teaching skills, deep subject knowledge, and ability to inspire and support student success. They serve as role models in their communities and demonstrate the significant impact teachers have on student achievement. Recipients will receive a paid trip to Washington D.C., professional development opportunities with the National Science Foundation’s $10,000 award signed by the President of the United States along with a certificate recognizing their achievements.

The Iowa Department of Education looks forward to announcing the winners later this year. The recognition and honor that come with receiving the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching highlight the dedication
