Iowa High School Sports Awards: Top Coaches of the Year

Iowa High School Sports Awards Celebrate the Best in Athletic Achievement

The Iowa High School Sports Awards, presented by SCHEELS, honored over 250 Iowa student-athletes on Monday night at Hoyt-Sherman Place in Des Moines. Among the recipients were Ankeny boys track and field coach Jordan Mullen and Clear Creek-Amana girls basketball coach PJ Sweeney, who were named the Boys and Girls Coaches of the Year.

Mullen led the Ankeny boys track team to their first state title in 48 years with a focus on creating a well-rounded team that excelled in sprinting, jumping, distance, and other areas. Under his guidance, the team set records and scored a historic 112 points at the state meet. This achievement was due to Mullen’s commitment to developing each player’s individual strengths while also emphasizing teamwork and collaboration.

On the other hand, Sweeney guided the Clear Creek-Amana girls basketball team to their first-ever Class 4A state title with an undefeated 26-0 season. Known for their strong defense, the Clippers limited opponents and secured victories throughout the year. Sweeney’s goal of bringing excitement to girls basketball at CCA has certainly been achieved with three state tournament appearances in five years and now a championship title to their name.
