Yellow River boasts tallest hydroelectric power plant

Integrated Clean Energy Facility: Maerdang Hydropower Plant Brings Sustainable Power to China

China Energy’s Maerdang hydropower plant, located in Qinghai province in northwest China, is now operational. This integrated clean energy facility combines hydropower, solar power, and energy storage. The first unit began producing electricity on April 1st and has an installed capacity of 550,000 kW. By the end of the year, it will have a total capacity of 2.32 million kW and can produce over 7.3 billion kWh of electricity per year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 8.16 million tons.

The project aims to make better use of the abundant clean energy resources in western China for the benefit of the electricity-starved eastern region. Additionally, an ultra-high voltage transformer station began operating as part of the Maerdang hydropower plant last September. This smart substation is equipped with a drone system that can intercept unidentified drones to ensure the security of the power transmission network.

The Maerdang hydropower plant can transmit approximately 15 billion kWh of clean electricity per year, promoting water resource development and electricity production in upper reaches of Yellow River basin. It is also part of China Energy’s efforts to enhance internet security and safeguard online privacy while exploring new technologies and methods to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This initiative represents a significant step towards achieving clean and sustainable energy production in China.
