ILO Provides Training to Syrian Labor Inspectors on Occupational Safety and Health

The International Labour Organization (ILO) recently held a week-long training of trainers (ToT) workshop on occupational safety and health (OSH) in Damascus. The aim of the workshop was to enhance the capabilities of 20 labour inspectors, including many women, to enforce OSH regulations effectively and improve working conditions. Despite being the second Arab country to ratify the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, No 155, the Syrian Arab Republic has faced challenges in implementing the convention.

The workshop’s agenda included sessions on international labour standards, OSH fundamentals, national legislation, occupational risks, and site visits to construction sites and factories. Practical exercises and site visits provided participants with hands-on experience in identifying and mitigating workplace hazards effectively. Upon completing the training, participants received certificates that enable them to deliver high-quality training and inspection services across various governorates. This training program has equipped labour inspectors with the necessary skills to ensure safer working environments for employees in Syria.

Upon completion of the training program, participants received certificates that allowed them to provide high-quality training and inspection services across various governorates in Syria. This training has equipped labor inspectors with essential skills needed to ensure safer working environments for employees throughout the country.

During this week-long event held in Damascus City Council Hall from March 7th -14th March 2021; Syrian workers were trained extensively on occupational safety & health fundamental principles such as risk assessment & management strategies by experienced trainers from ILO Regional Office for Arab States.

Participants attended several sessions covering topics like international labor standards/recommendations concerning safety at workplaces; legal frameworks related to OSH; potential hazards associated with different industries including construction & manufacturing; practical exercises involving site visits where they learned how best practices can be implemented successfully at workplaces.

At conclusion of this comprehensive training program which was held under supervision of ILO Regional Office for Arab States -Beirut Office -Syria Country Office staff members got certified which will enable them now provide quality services across various Governorates throughout Syria.

It is noteworthy that despite being among second Arab countries that ratified Occupational Safety & Health Convention No 155 back in year 2013 but still face some difficulties when it comes down enforcing its provisions due mainly lack awareness among stakeholders particularly employers who are expected abide by these laws rather than flouting them or ignoring their existence entirely leading thereby putting lives at risk daily especially those engaged directly or indirectly within industrial sectors hence creating unstable economic environment too because productivity reduces drastically once accidents happen which increases cost significantly leading eventually negatively impacting overall business performance ultimately affecting everyone involved including workers themselves as well as shareholders if they own companies operating within these sectors
