Minnesota families are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to power their homes. In response, Great River Energy has launched a new project aimed at harnessing all of this energy. Using a drone and just two minutes, a Heimdall Neuron can be installed onto a power line. Inside the Neuron are sensors that provide real-time data on the power line, including temperature, angle, wind speed, and more.
Great River Energy’s Vice President Priti Patel explained that the technology gives insights into factors that influence power flow on a line. Heimdall Power CEO Jorgen Festervoll added that the Neuron draws power directly from the line and can operate for decades without maintenance. The pilot program by Great River Energy last year used four Neurons and estimated an increase in capacity by over 40%. This month, they are rolling out 52 Neurons to further enhance their energy capabilities.
The change in power supply is in line with Minnesota’s carbon-free standard by 2040. As more energy sources connect to the grid, the Neurons provide crucial knowledge that allows Great River Energy to send more power over more lines safely and reliably. Festervoll mentioned that utilities can increase capacity on their lines by 30-40% at a fraction of the cost and time of constructing new power lines.
Patel highlighted that this leads to reduced costs for customers and allows for capital investments to be reprioritized. The Heimdall Neurons can also assist during outages and maintenance by helping crews locate grid issues more efficiently. By utilizing this innovative technology, Great River Energy is paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
