Google’s CO2 Emissions Rise 48% as Company Faces Challenge of Balancing AI Demand with Climate Concerns

Last year, Google’s CO₂ emissions rose by 48 percent from 2019, reaching a total of 14.3 million tons. This increase is largely due to the growing demand for artificial intelligence, which requires energy-intensive data centers. Both Amazon and Microsoft, Google’s competitors, are also facing this issue.

Google has acknowledged the challenge of reducing emissions while integrating AI into its products due to the higher energy demands associated with AI calculations and infrastructure investments. To address this challenge, the company has set a goal to achieve net zero emissions across all operations by 2030. In order to reach this goal, Google plans to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half from the 2019 baseline and offset any remaining emissions through investments in carbon removal solutions.
