Android 15 to restrict app downloads on outdated OS versions

Google Enhances Android Security Threshold for App Installations: New Feature Targets Outdated Android Versions

In an effort to improve the security and performance of its mobile operating system, Google is increasing the security threshold for installing applications on obsolete versions of Android. This means that starting with Android 15, apps will need to target at least Android 7.0 Nougat in order to be downloaded in parallel.

The second preview of Android 15 Developer introduces a new security feature that prevents the installation of apps from outside the Google Play Store with an SDK level lower than 24. This change aims to protect mobile devices by blocking insecure apps that do not have the latest security features.

If someone tries to download an app targeting an outdated version of Android, they will receive a warning dialog informing them that the app has been blocked due to security concerns. This change is consistent with Google’s efforts to enhance the security and compatibility of its mobile operating system.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which was released in 2015, introduced significant changes to the operating system to improve battery life and privacy protection. With this new security threshold in place for Android 15, Google aims to ensure that apps are compatible with modern security standards.

This move follows a similar one made with Android 14, which required apps to be compatible with at least Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The continued evolution of Android’s security features reflects Google’s commitment to providing users with a safe and secure mobile experience.
