Gasgrid Launches Preliminary Plan for Finland’s Hydrogen Transmission Network to Boost Hydrogen Market by 2030

Finland’s hydrogen market is set to take off thanks to the national hydrogen transmission network. Gasgrid, the gas transmission network company, has unveiled a preliminary plan for the country’s backbone network with the goal of establishing an open hydrogen market by 2030.

The initial phase of the hydrogen transmission network will focus on building infrastructure primarily in the coastal area of Finland. This decision was influenced by the fact that a large number of wind power projects are located on the west coast, and a significant portion of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions come from southern Finland. Plans for expanding the network include areas in eastern, central, and northern Finland where new wind or solar power production can be developed.

Gasgrid is set to begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the network starting in spring 2024. Feedback on these route options will be gathered from companies and project developers involved in advancing the hydrogen economy. There is a collective effort to support the development of this vital infrastructure and foster a thriving hydrogen market in Finland.
