From Homemaker to Entrepreneur: Amanda Flann’s Baking Business Takes Shape

Amanda Flann started her own baking business, As Much As You Knead, in 2022 as a way to stay at home with her three-year-old daughter, Scottie. Flann had always found baking to be a relaxing activity and wanted to turn it into a career. She began selling baked goods through a direct-to-consumer, porch-pickup business in June of that same year.

Flann’s daughter is always close by when she bakes and helps out with small but helpful tasks. Flann wants to make sure that her daughter never feels like she is second to her job, as she believes that the time they spend together is irreplaceable. The business was founded during a challenging season of life for Flann, but she finds baking to be a restful activity and wanted to start her own business so she could be at home with her daughter.

As Much As You Knead offers sourdough-making classes which Flann enjoys as an extrovert and people person. For Mother’s Day last year, Flann offered pre-painted bread decorated with flowers as a unique gift. Now, she and her daughter are preparing to hold a class together where loved ones and their children can create painted bread of their own. Flann believes that this class is a special opportunity for her and her daughter to work together and share the joy of baking with others.

The “Mommy & Me Sourdough Painting” class will be held on Saturday, May 11 at Poly’s Place Coffee from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 per person, and participants will each receive a fresh-baked sourdough loaf to decorate with food-safe paint and markers. Flann expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside her youngest best friend and teach others the art of baking.

Amanda Flann’s journey started in January 2022 when she began growing her own sourdough starter in order to start selling baked goods through a direct-to-consumer, porch pickup business in June of that same year
