From Gun Violence to Floating Bogs: A Deep Dive into Wisconsin’s Public Health and Community Initiatives

In this episode, two doctors from Wisconsin discuss the impact of gun violence on public health. The African American Leadership Alliance Milwaukee is resurrecting President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper program, with the goal of creating more opportunities for young men of color and improve their futures.

Last month, the surgeon general declared gun violence a public health crisis for Americans. These doctors provide insight into the effects of gun violence on the overall health of the public. One doctor explains how gun violence leads to physical injuries, trauma and long-term mental health issues that affect individuals, families and communities. The other doctor shares statistics and research on the prevalence of gun violence in Wisconsin and its impact on public health.

The leader of the effort to revive My Brother’s Keeper program in Milwaukee discusses what it will take to ensure that the program is successful in achieving its objectives. He highlights the need for collaboration between government agencies, community organizations and private businesses to create opportunities for young men of color and provide them with support and resources to succeed.

In Hayward, Wisconsin, a unique community demonstrated its ability to move floating bogs. Last month, a 2-acre bog with 30-foot Tamarack trees blocked waterways on Lake Chippewa Flowage near Hayward. A group of “bog pushers” utilized their boats to move the bog and clear the waterways for boaters. One of the pushers explains the process involved in moving these floating structures with precision, highlighting how teamwork, planning and technology are key factors in success.

The episode features hosts Rob Ferrett and Kate Archer Kent, along with guests Dr. Stephen Hargarten, Dr. Megan Schultz, Walter Lanier, and Cheryl Treland. Executive producer Dean Knetter and producers Tim Peterson, Royce Podeszwa, Beatrice Lawrence
