Fortescua Partners with KBR on €203.7 Million Green Ammonia Plant in Norway

KBR has been awarded a contract to provide its green ammonia technology, K-GreeN, for the Holmaneset green energy project in Norway. The project is being developed by Fortescue, an Australian company specializing in green energy, technology, and metals. Under the terms of the contract, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) support services for the 675 metric tonnes per day grassroots green ammonia plant in Norway.

Fortescua is excited about partnering with KBR on this project and offering their zero-carbon green ammonia technology. This collaboration aligns with Fortescua’s ESG objectives and aims to play a significant role in the development of the green energy value chain and decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries. The Holmaneset plant will produce green ammonia using electrolyzers powered by renewable hydropower for hydrogen production, with plans to distribute the ammonia to domestic and European markets to aid in the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries.

Fortescua expects construction to begin in 2025 and operations to commence in 2027 pending final approvals from the board. In early 2024, Fortescua awarded Tecnimont, a business unit of Italy’s Maire, the FEED work for the plant, including designing electrolyzer integration, air separation unit for nitrogen production, ammonia production plant, storage facilities and ship loading facilities. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an engineering procurement and construction (EPC) proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement.

The Holmaneset project achieved significant milestones in 2023 with a grant of €203.7 million from the European Union (EU) for the green ammonia plant and securing renewable power for the project through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, a renewable energy supplier. This progress reflects Fortescua’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in
