Deputy Director of the Daniel Sancho Investigation, “Big Joke,” Released on Bail for Money Laundering Charges

Former Thai Police Chief Implicated in Money Laundering Scandal Released on Bail Amidst Legal Struggle: What You Need to Know

Former Thai Police Deputy Chief Surachate Hakparn, also known as Big Joke, was released on bail after being implicated in money laundering for an online betting network. He had previously ignored three police summonses before the court issued an arrest warrant against him. The allegations against Surachate stem from his suspected involvement in a money laundering operation for an online betting site, which was dismantled last year.

The case comes amidst a power struggle within the Thai Police as Surachate had applied to be appointed director of the Police. His removal from his position, along with another senior officer, was ordered by the prime minister to protect ongoing investigations. Surachate was previously involved in controversy in 2019 when he was removed from the force without explanation.

Despite these legal issues, it is important to note that the allegations against Surachate are unrelated to the high-profile investigation into the crime of premeditated murder involving a Spaniard and a Colombian individual. This case has garnered significant media attention, with Surachate previously serving as the face of the investigation and providing updates to the public.

Surachate maintains his innocence and emphasizes that he is innocent until proven guilty by the court. The former deputy director of the Thai Police paid bail of 100,000 baht (about $2,700) and spent two hours answering police questions at a Bangkok police station before being released.
