Food Insecurity and Malnutrition Persist in Gaza: The FAO’s Fight Against Hunger

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has left many people relying on canned food for survival. This dire situation has been highlighted by Samir Zaqut, the deputy director of the Palestinian NGO Al Mezan, who expressed his concern over the impact of the war on livestock and agriculture, leading to food insecurity and malnutrition in the population.

To address this urgent need for food, the FAO has introduced barley fodder to support local livestock production and promote fresh and nutritious food like milk and meat to the population. Despite challenges in obtaining permits and security risks, the FAO is determined to continue the distribution of fodder in Gaza.

The FAO emphasizes that combating hunger and malnutrition requires ensuring access to a variety of foods, not just bread. The organization’s goal is to prevent famine and promote a balanced diet for the people of Gaza. However, many families are resorting to wild herbs or animal feed to alleviate hunger due to limited access to essential items like clean water and cooking gas.

The FAO’s efforts are hindered by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which prevents humanitarian aid from being delivered safely. Without a ceasefire, it is challenging to sustain food distribution and agricultural support. Nevertheless, the FAO remains committed to providing food security and nutrition to those who need it most.

International aid organizations are working tirelessly alongside the FAO to alleviate the suffering of people facing an unprecedented crisis of food insecurity and malnutrition in Gaza. With limited access to essential items like clean water and cooking gas, these organizations continue their efforts towards providing sustainable solutions that will help improve living conditions for those affected by this crisis.
