Flying in Comfort: Navigating Altitude Sickness, Dryness, and Dental Issues

As summer approaches, people are eager to take a break from the stress and anxiety that plagues everyday life. Whether it’s for a quick getaway or a chance to breathe in some fresh air, the journey to vacation can be fraught with obstacles.

One of the most common challenges faced during flights is altitude sickness. At an altitude of around 33,000 feet, the body undergoes many changes that can affect its functioning. One common issue is swelling, caused by gas expanding throughout the body, leading to bloating and abdominal pain. To alleviate this discomfort, it is recommended to stay hydrated before the flight and discuss any constipation issues with a doctor. In some cases, it may be helpful to use glycerin suppositories or an enema before flying.

Another challenge faced during flights is dryness, as the air in planes is very dry with low humidity levels. This can cause discomfort, especially for those wearing contact lenses. To combat dryness, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during the flight. Additionally, removing contact lenses before the flight and using eye drops can help alleviate dryness in the eyes.

As flights ascend in altitude, changes in gas distribution can lead to ear pain. To reduce this discomfort, it is recommended to perform the pump action method by closing the nostrils and blowing through the nose under pressure. Yawning and chewing gum can also help equalize the pressure in the ears. In cases of colds or swollen mucous membranes, it may be best to postpone the flight or use cooling medications to reduce congestion.

Passengers with dental issues such as cavities or recent dental procedures may experience toothaches during take-off due to gas expansion. It is important to maintain good dental health and seek treatment for any pain before flying
