Expansion planned for organization providing housing to families of VA health care system patients in Pittsburgh area

Fisher House: Providing Comfort and Relief to Families of Military Members and Veterans in the Pittsburgh Area

In the Pittsburgh area, families of military members and veterans who need to travel long distances to receive care at VA hospitals often face financial burdens. This is where the Fisher House comes in, providing free housing for family members who live more than 50 miles away from the VA hospital where their loved one is being treated. The Fisher House has a housing center next to the VA hospital in Oakland that can accommodate 10 families at a time.

The goal of the Fisher House is to provide families with a comfortable place to stay and relieve some of the stress that comes with having a loved one in the hospital. Families who stay at the Fisher House save an average of $1,900 during their six-day stay. With this support, they can focus on their loved ones’ health without worrying about finances or finding suitable accommodations.

To continue providing support and housing for military and veteran families in need, the Fisher House is planning to expand its services by building a new facility in O’Hara Township, which is expected to open in 2026. This new facility will provide housing for even more families, including those who have relatives in nursing homes, hospice care or rehab at the VA hospital.

The cost to build a Fisher House is $9 million, and the organization is working to raise $3 million in funding. They hope that with community support and donations, they can make this expansion possible and continue making a difference in the lives of those who sacrifice so much for our country. The Fisher House seeks corporate sponsorships as they work towards funding this new facility so that it can be built as soon as possible.

In conclusion, The Fisher house plays an essential role in supporting military members and veterans by providing them with free housing when they have to travel long distances for treatment at VA hospitals. Their plan to build a new facility will help even more families cope with stressors brought upon by their loved ones’ health issues while saving them money during their stay.
