In Costa Maya, Mexico, a small fire occurred on board the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship. The 1,200-foot-long and 250,800 gross ton vessel was berthed at the time of the incident. Despite a brief loss of power, back-up power was activated immediately.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported. According to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, the overall impact on board was minimal. Passengers were alerted about the incident through on-board announcements, and social media users in an Icon of the Seas Facebook group reported minor disruptions to their day.
The ship features seven swimming pools, including a 17,000-square-foot water park. Despite this small setback, things quickly returned to normal for passengers on board. The ship’s itinerary was not impacted by the fire and is now heading to the Mexican island of Cozumel.
Royal Caribbean stated that while fires are not common on cruise ships, they are usually handled swiftly and with minimal disruption to passengers. In March, a fire broke out on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship that was captured on video by a passenger.
