Dual-Threat Quarterback Ty Hawkins Flips Commitment from TCU to SMU: What’s Driving His Decision?

In a significant development for the quarterback landscape of the 2025 class, Rivals250 quarterback Ty Hawkins has flipped his commitment from TCU to SMU. Hawkins, ranked as the No. 159 overall prospect and No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the 2025 cycle, had been committed to TCU since June 2023.

Hawkins, now at IMG Academy, is the headlining piece of SMU’s 2025 class, which includes five four-star prospects, four of whom are from Dallas. The Mustangs targeted Hawkins to fill the void left by Keelon Russell, who committed to Alabama earlier in the summer. During his visit, SMU’s plans for him resonated with Hawkins, leading to his decision to commit.

After staying in touch with the coaching staff and reflecting on his official visit, Hawkins felt that SMU offered him the best opportunity to play early and excel in the ACC. He expressed his trust in coach Deriq King and coach Rhett Lashlee, believing that he would fit well in their offensive system.

Hawkins revealed that his decision to commit to SMU came in the past few days, following two good visits to both TCU and SMU. While he had nothing negative to say about TCU, he ultimately felt that SMU was the better choice for him moving forward. In his high school career at San Antonio (Texas) Johnson, Hawkins has demonstrated his skills on the field, throwing for over 4,200 yards and 54 touchdowns while also rushing for nearly 1900 yards and 24 touchdowns.
