Discovering Rome’s Hidden Gems: A Journey through the City’s Underrated Monuments
Growing up in Rome, I’ve become accustomed to the hordes of tourists that flock to iconic monuments like the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums. However, despite these popular attractions, there are many other sites in Rome that are just as historic and awe-inspiring.
The Eternal City is one of the most popular cities to visit in the world, but it can be overwhelming for first-time visitors. While I believe both the Colosseum and Vatican Museums are must-sees, they are often crowded and can be overwhelming. Instead, on your next trip to Rome, consider exploring some of the city’s lesser-known monuments.
One such monument is the Stadium of Domitian, located in Largo di Torre Argentina. This ancient amphitheater was built during the reign of Emperor Domitian and hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Another option is Castel Sant’Angelo, a fortress built in the 2nd century AD that has served as a prison, hospital, and museum over the years. These underrated monuments offer a unique perspective on Rome’s rich history without the crowds that often accompany more well-known attractions.
