U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett from Texas has become the first Democrat to publicly call on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, citing his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump as evidence that he must not pave the way for another Trump victory.
While other Democrats have criticized Biden’s performance in the debate, only U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse expressed concern over his appearance and called for transparency regarding his condition. However, Senate leader Chuck Schumer defended Biden’s fitness to serve by highlighting his achievements over the past four years.
Despite this call for withdrawal, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre mentioned that President Biden is firm on continuing his reelection campaign, with plans for an August convention in Chicago and a speech with Democratic governors and other party leaders scheduled this week. The Democratic National Committee is expected to nominate Biden as its candidate in mid-July.
