The House of Representatives recently approved a new aid package for Ukraine, despite opposition from the MAGA movement. This comes as a relief to many observers who have been concerned about the country’s survival amidst the overwhelming Russian artillery. However, some are also embarrassed by the closeness of the United States to betraying an endangered democracy. Anger is directed towards the political faction that blocked aid for months, seemingly in support of Vladimir Putin.
While it’s important to set emotions aside and analyze the facts, there are still myths surrounding aid to Ukraine that need to be debunked. Contrary to belief, spending on Ukraine is not a huge burden on the United States nor does it bear this cost alone without support from European allies. American aid remains crucial as Europe can provide money but lacks sufficient military hardware to support Ukraine adequately.
Comparing aid to Ukraine to historical parallels such as Franklin Roosevelt’s Lend-Lease program, it becomes evident that the current aid is much smaller relative to the size of the US economy. However, this does not mean that American support is any less crucial for Ukraine’s survival. While relief is felt that aid has been approved, concerns for the future of Ukraine remain as American support remains crucial for its survival.
