Debating Diversity: ESPN’s Controversial Selection for this Year’s Pat Tillman ESPY Award

The Tillman Foundation, established by Marie Tillman Shenton, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to serving others in a manner that reflects the legacy of Pat Tillman. While ESPN has defended its decision to honor Prince Harry with this year’s ESPYs Pat Tillman Award, Mary Tillman, Pat Tillman’s mother, has raised concerns about the choice.

Mary Tillman is not involved in the Tillman Foundation and does not partake in the selection process for the award. She believes that ESPN should have chosen someone else who more closely aligns with her son’s values and legacy.

Last year, the Pat Tillman ESPY Award was presented to the training staff of the Buffalo Bills for their heroic actions in saving a life. Pat Tillman was a former Cardinals safety who left the NFL to join the Army following the 9/11 attacks and ultimately lost his life in Afghanistan at age 27.

ESPN stands by its decision to honor Prince Harry for his work with The Invictus Games Foundation, which focuses on promoting healing through sports for military service members and veterans globally. While opinions may vary on the selection of honorees, ESPN believes in recognizing and celebrating causes that make a positive impact.
