COVID-19 Symptoms: What’s the Same, What’s Different, and How to Stay Informed

Recently, a journalist spoke with Mako Health to hear about Noa’s (pseudonym) experience with COVID-19. Noa, who has not been infected in over four years, described her symptoms as waking up with body aches, weakness, and a high fever. Similar symptoms were reported by other patients, while some experienced additional troublesome issues such as confusion, lack of concentration and redness on their face.

Hagit (pseudonym), another patient, mentioned feeling intense back pain and overall discomfort accompanied by fever and chills. Some patients also reported stomach pains and diarrhea. Professor Cyril Cohen, head of the immunotherapy laboratory at Bar-Ilan University explained that new strains of the virus may cause different symptoms but not necessarily differ in severity. He listed familiar symptoms like fever, chills, sore throat, fatigue, muscle pain and loss of taste and smell. However, some patients have reported new symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Professor Cohen emphasized the importance of testing for the virus if symptoms arise and advised annual vaccinations for the elderly to prevent serious illness. He noted that the virus changes quickly so vaccine updates may be necessary. The professor recommended that testing for the virus should be done a few days after symptoms appear to ensure an accurate result. He warned about the potential complications of the virus especially for older individuals and those with weakened immune systems. In conclusion, it is crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
