In the bottom of the ninth inning, Florida State baseball found themselves one strike away from victory against Tennessee. However, a controversial check swing call by the third base umpire prevented them from taking the win.
Florida State pitcher Brennen Oxford was facing off against Tennessee’s Blake Burke, with Burke on base after giving up a double. Oxford had a 2-2 count against Burke and delivered what looked like a swinging strike. But an appeal determined that Burke did not go around, extending the count to 3-2. FSU manager Link Jarrett expressed his displeasure with the umpire’s decision as seen on the ESPN broadcast.
Despite the questionable call, Burke would go on to hit a game-tying single up the middle, resulting in an 11-11 tie. Tennessee would then walk off with the win, handing Florida State a 12-11 loss and sending them to the loser’s bracket of the CWS. Florida State had entered the eighth inning with an 11-7 lead, only to see it slip away in the closing moments of the game.
