Columbus’s leading physician responds to the classification of gun violence as a national health emergency

Columbus Health Officials Urge Lawmakers to Act on Gun Violence Crisis Declared by U.S. Surgeon General

Columbus, Ohio, Public Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts is urging lawmakers to take action on the issue of gun violence, which has become a national public health crisis as declared by the U.S. Surgeon General. The 40-page advisory by Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlights the alarming data and fatalities associated with gun violence in communities across the United States.

Dr. Roberts expressed concern about the long-overdue declaration by the surgeon general, but noted that Columbus has recognized the public health impact of violence for years and has been working to address it. The city’s efforts include banning assault weapons, increasing regulation on the gun industry, and implementing universal background checks.

The report by the surgeon general advocates for these measures as well as other recommendations to reduce gun-related injuries and deaths in communities across the country. Dr. Roberts stated that her department will assess these recommendations to see how they align with existing efforts to combat gun violence in Columbus.

Looking ahead, Dr. Roberts hopes that the national designation of gun violence as a public health crisis will pave the way for more funding and support at the federal level to expand initiatives aimed at addressing this issue effectively. She emphasized that additional resources are crucial in finding solutions to reduce gun-related injuries and deaths in communities across America.

Despite criticism from organizations like NRA labeling it part of Biden administration’s agenda against law-abiding gun owners, Dr Roberts’ focus remains on finding effective solutions to combat this pressing issue.

In conclusion, addressing gun violence is an urgent matter that requires immediate action from lawmakers at all levels of government. By working together, we can find effective solutions to reduce gun-related injuries and deaths in communities across America.
