Cheltenham Town is preparing for the upcoming season in League Two with the addition of two new goalkeepers to the squad. Owen Evans, 27, has returned to the club after being released by Walsall, where he spent two seasons. He previously had a loan spell with Cheltenham in 2020, making 45 appearances before moving to Walsall.
Meanwhile, Joe Day, 33, has joined the team from Newport as a player-coach. Day worked with Cheltenham manager Michael Flynn during his time at Newport. Flynn expressed his confidence in Day, referring to him as a “fantastic lad with a good temperament” and highlighting his goalkeeping skills.
Day’s role at Cheltenham will be as a player-coach, a position he is comfortable with. Flynn believes that Day’s experience and abilities will make him a valuable addition to the squad. With Evans and Day now part of the team, Cheltenham Town is gearing up for the challenges that lie ahead in League Two.
Flynn was pleased with Day’s signing, saying: “Joe is an experienced goalkeeper who has played at this level before and knows what it takes to succeed in League Two.” He added: “He will bring leadership and guidance to our young goalkeepers and help them develop their skills.”
Evans also expressed his excitement about returning to the club where he began his career. He said: “It feels great to be back here at Cheltenham Town. I have always had a special place in my heart for this club and I am looking forward to helping them succeed in League Two.”
