Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL secure exclusive rights to negotiate with Chase Claypool

Chase Claypool’s NFL Career Takes a Turn: A Look at His Future Amidst Uncertainty and New Opportunities

In the past, receiver Chase Claypool appeared to be on the fast track to stardom in the NFL. However, his name has not surfaced during the current signing period, leaving many to wonder about his future. Claypool, a second-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2020, is currently a free agent. Despite this, he remains a valuable asset for any team that may be interested in adding him.

In his rookie season with the Steelers, Claypool scored a total of 11 touchdowns and gained 873 receiving yards. He followed this up with an additional 860 yards in his second season with the team. However, things took a turn for the worse when he was traded to the Bears by the Steelers in exchange for a second-round pick during his third season. Unfortunately, Miami’s tampering caused issues and resulted in Claypool being ultimately selected as the 32nd overall pick in the draft. The Bears later traded him during the 2023 season for a swap of sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2025. Despite playing for three different teams over two seasons, Claypool’s performance was limited to just four catches for 26 yards in nine regular-season games.

Despite these challenges, it remains possible that Claypool could find a new team after this year’s draft or wait for injuries to create an opportunity. Regardless of where he ends up, he will undoubtedly have some talent that could benefit any team that adds him to their roster. With so much uncertainty surrounding his future right now, it is clear that Claypool’s once promising football career has taken a negative turn in recent years.

However, there is still hope for him as he navigates his future in professional football. The CFL has taken notice of his potential availability and has added him to their exclusive negotiating list. This means that if he decides to play north of the border and becomes available through free agency or trades, they will have first dibs on signing him.

It remains uncertain whether or not Claypool will decide to play with the Roughriders or opt for another destination altogether. Regardless of where he goes next year or beyond that point, it is clear that Chase Claypool still has plenty left to offer as one of football’s most talented receivers.
