Observing millions of sleeping butterflies and more: June’s top science images

Charming Threat: The Monarch Butterfly’s Delicate Balance on the Brink of Extinction

Wildlife photographer Jaime Rojo captured the incredible sight of millions of sleeping Monarch butterflies adorning trees in Michoacán, Mexico during their annual migration. His photograph won the grand prize at this year’s Big Picture photography competition. The image showcases the delicate balance that exists within ecosystems and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving natural habitats and protecting vulnerable species like the Monarch butterfly.

The Monarch butterflies migrate around 3,000 miles from Canada and the United States every spring, forming dense clusters high up in the trees to rest and recover their strength. However, Rojo expressed concern in his competition entry that scenes like this could become rare in the future due to climate change, deforestation, pesticide exposure, and the loss of milkweed plants – the only plant where Monarchs lay their eggs.

Seeing so many butterflies gathered in one place is a testament to the majestic beauty of nature and highlights the need to address issues such as climate change, deforestation, and pesticide use that are threatening their survival. These butterflies are not just a spectacle to admire but a crucial part of the ecosystem that supports a diverse range of plant and animal species. By highlighting the beauty and fragility of the Monarch butterfly population, Rojo’s photograph encourages us to take action to protect these important pollinators and the habitats they rely on.
