Buffalo Bills Radio Veteran John Murphy Announces Retirement from Play-by-Play Duties for Upcoming Season

After 35 years as a fixture on the Buffalo Bills radio broadcast team, longtime announcer John Murphy has decided to step away from his play-by-play duties for the upcoming 2024-25 season. However, he has expressed that he may still be involved in the game day broadcast in a different capacity moving forward.

In an interview with WBEN radio, Murphy shared that he feels ready to start a new chapter in his life. This decision comes after dealing with the effects of a stroke that caused him to miss the end of the 2022 season and the entirety of the 2023 season. Chris Brown has taken over the play-by-play duties during his absence.

Over the years, Murphy’s contributions to the Bills’ radio broadcast have been instrumental in keeping fans engaged and informed throughout the years. As a color analyst from 1984-1989 and 1994-2003 before transitioning into play-by-play announcer for the last 19 years from 2004 to 2022, he played an important role in providing commentary and analysis on every aspect of Bills football.

While it is unclear what specific role Murphy may take on moving forward, he has expressed that he is excited about this new chapter in his life and looking forward to exploring new opportunities outside of sports broadcasting.
