In a surprising turn of events, Broward School Board in Fort Lauderdale, FL announced the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata during its meeting on December 10th. According to sources, Licata had been undergoing treatment for a medical condition for several months and after discussing it with his family and doctors, he decided to retire from his role as an educator after over 30 years in South Florida.
Following the announcement, the board voted 8-1 to replace him with Howard Hepburn, a deputy superintendent within the district. This marks the fourth time in just four years that Broward County Public Schools will be searching for a new superintendent. The previous three superintendents, including former Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright, who was removed due to her leadership style after only serving for about a year, have all left due to various reasons.
Licata expressed gratitude for the community’s faith and trust in him and stated that he believes the district is on the right path for even greater accomplishments. With Licata stepping down on December 31st, Broward County Public Schools will begin its search for its fourth superintendent in just four years.
