Boston College Winger Ryan Leonard Chooses to Return for Sophomore Season, Leaving Capitals Playoffs in Limbo

Ryan Leonard, the eighth overall pick in last year’s draft, has decided to return to Boston College for his sophomore season instead of joining the Washington Capitals for the playoffs. General manager Brian MacLellan confirmed this decision on Wednesday, stating that Leonard expressed a desire to continue developing at the NCAA level before transitioning to the NHL.

Despite speculation on social media suggesting Leonard may change his mind and join the Capitals, he has chosen to stay at Boston College. The 6-foot, 192-pound winger had an impressive season with 60 points in 41 games for the Eagles, helping them reach the Frozen Four. He set program records for goals scored by a freshman and ranked third in goals scored in the NCAA during his freshman year at Boston College.

While Leonard will not be joining the Capitals, his decision to return to Boston College will allow him to continue playing alongside his linemates and chase a national championship. Cutter Gauthier, who also had a successful season in college hockey, recently signed with Anaheim and is expected to make his debut for the Ducks in their upcoming game.

It will be exciting to see how Leonard progresses in his sophomore year at Boston College and how his decision to prioritize development in the NCAA will shape his future in the NHL. The Capitals and their fans will be eagerly watching to see how Ryan Leonard continues to grow and build upon his successful freshman season.
