Bindyarani Devi Secures Bronze at IWF World Cup, Earns Olympic Quota in Women’s 55kg Weightlifting

Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi achieved an impressive feat by winning a bronze medal at the IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand. In the non-Olympic women’s 55kg category, she lifted a total of 196kg (83kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk) to secure the third position in the standings. Although this effort fell short of her silver medal-winning performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she lifted 203kg.

The gold medal at the IWF World Cup was won by Kang Hyon Gyong from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea with a lift of 234kg. Romania’s Mihaela Cambei took home the silver with a personal best of 201kg. In the snatch category, Bindyarani had a rocky start with a failed attempt at 83kg but eventually succeeded on her second try. However, she could not lift 86kg in her next attempt. Moving on to the clean and jerk segment, she successfully lifted 110kg and 113kg in her first two attempts but missed her final attempt at 119kg.

Despite missing out on gold, Bindyarani Devi excelled in the clean and jerk category, earning a silver medal. Currently, she is ranked 29th in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for the women’s 59kg, where the top ten ranked eligible lifters in each weight category secure a quota for Paris Olympics. Mirabai Chanu who competed in women’s49 kg finished twelfth in Phuket is expected to secure a quota for India at Olympics as she is currently ranked second overall.

Bindyarani Devi and Mirabai Chanu were India’s only athletes competing at IWF World Cup
