Trump and Biden clash over economy following a missed handshake at the debate kickoff – ABC4 Utah

Biden vs. Trump: A Heated First Debate Highlights Policy Differences and Reproductive Rights

The first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump took place without any handshakes, quickly delving into a heated discussion on policy. The two candidates attacked each other’s record on the economy, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

Biden spoke softly with a hoarse voice, highlighting the economic gains made during his presidency and emphasizing that he had rescued the economy from chaos and a free fall. Trump, on the other hand, boasted about the state of the economy during his own term, attributing rising prices to Biden’s policies and claiming that inflation was “killing” the country.

As the debate progressed, abortion took center stage. Biden accused Trump of eroding abortion rights with his three appointees to the U.S. Supreme Court, which led to the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Biden promised to restore law under Roe if re-elected, emphasizing women’s reproductive rights are important. Trump defended his presidency’s approach to abortion by arguing that he had returned the issue to states through state laws. He reiterated his support for abortion ban exceptions in cases of rape, incest and life of mother while falsely claiming that Biden supported abortion up to and after birth. The two candidates drew a clear distinction on this issue with Trump labeling Democrats as radicals on abortions.

The debate showcased sharp policy differences between Biden and Trump, setting up a contentious 2024 election campaign where they will continue to clash over key issues affecting Americans’ lives.
