On Friday, over two dozen American congressmen from both the Democratic and Republican parties presented a bill to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan. The bill, authored by congressmen Dina Titus and Gus Bilirakis, includes individual sanctions against over 40 Azerbaijani officials and security forces.
The resolution proposes imposing sanctions on Azerbaijan for ongoing human rights violations, including crimes against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to Politico magazine, the initial list of names targeted for sanctions was 41, but it was later expanded to 44.
Dina Titus, one of the authors of the bill, stated that sanctions should be imposed on Azerbaijani officials for ethnic cleansing against Armenians in Artsakh and repression of the opposition. The bill has sparked controversy and garnered attention from various media outlets. The authors of the document believe that taking action against Azerbaijan is necessary to address the violations of human rights and to stand up against injustice.
As the bill makes its way through the legislative process, it is expected to be a topic of debate and discussion. Some argue that imposing sanctions would only harm innocent citizens while others believe it is a necessary step to bring about change in Azerbaijan’s behavior towards its minority groups.
