Snam chooses Baker Hughes’ hydrogen-ready technology for its gas network

Baker Hughes Secures Contract for Hybrid Gas Turbine Technology in Italy’s Snam Adriatic Line Pipeline Project

Snam, an Italian energy infrastructure company, has awarded Baker Hughes, a U.S. energy technology company, a contract to provide three turbocompressors driven by NovaLT12 gas turbine technology for a new gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy. The station is part of Snam’s Adriatic Line pipeline project, which aims to construct a 425-kilometer-long hydrogen-ready pipeline to transport energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean region to northern Europe.

The contract between Snam and Baker Hughes was awarded following a public tender and continues a long-standing collaboration between the two companies. In 2020, they tested the world’s first hybrid hydrogen turbine for a gas network and installed a NovaLT12 turbine at Snam’s site in Istrana, Italy. The adoption of NovaLT12 turbines allows for running on 100% natural gas or hydrogen blends up to 10%, supporting the decarbonization of the Italian gas network infrastructure and Snam’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality on direct emissions by 2040.

Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of continuous partnership in the energy transition. The collaboration with Snam is part of Baker Hughes’ commitment to developing innovative technology solutions like the NovaLT12 to decarbonize energy ecosystems, create a hydrogen economy, and ensure an affordable and secure energy supply. In January 2024, Baker Hughes shared updates on active hydrogen projects, including a new hydrogen testing facility in Florence, Italy
