Arizona Tax Business Faces Injunction for Alleged Fraud

Arizonan Justice Department Seeks to Shut Down Fraudulent Tax Prep Company, Golden Heart Tax Services

Arizona’s Justice Department has filed a permanent injunction against Golden Heart Tax Services and its tax preparers due to alleged fraudulent activity. The request aims to dismantle the business and prevent the defendants from owning or operating a tax preparation business and preparing tax returns. The complaint alleges that the defendants falsely prepared tax returns to increase customer refunds and profit through high undisclosed preparation fees.

The defendants include Mayuen Ajak, Yier Deng, Bol Guot, Gabriel Kuot, and Golden Heart Tax Services LLC. Golden Heart Tax Services was founded in Texas in 2018 and is currently operating in Arizona, Texas, Missouri, and Nebraska. The complaint accuses the defendants of claiming false fuel, COVID-related, education, and earned income tax credits as well as fabricating business-related incomes. Many of the defendants’ customers are immigrants to the United States with limited English proficiency and tax knowledge.

The Internal Revenue Service estimates that approximately $10 million was lost in underreported income or unpaid taxes due to the defendants’ alleged misconduct. To help taxpayers avoid unscrupulous tax preparers, the IRS provides information on its website about choosing a tax return preparer. The IRS also offers a directory of legitimate tax preparers to assist taxpayers in finding reputable services. It is crucial to be cautious and informed when selecting a tax preparation service to avoid falling victim to fraudulent practices.
