Amazon to discontinue using ‘Just Walk Out’ technology at grocery stores

Amazon Ditches ‘Just Walk Out’ Technology in Favor of New Cashier-Less Checkout System

Amazon has recently announced that it will be discontinuing its “Just Walk Out” self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States. Instead, the company will be replacing this technology with the “Amazon Dash Cart,” which provides a similar checkout-free experience for customers.

The “Just Walk Out” technology previously allowed customers to grab items and leave without waiting in a checkout line by using sensors and cameras to track their selections. However, the new Amazon Dash Cart will allow shoppers to scan items before placing them in the cart and pay automatically without having to wait in line.

According to Jessica Martin, an Amazon spokesperson, the company has been redesigning its Amazon Fresh stores to enhance the overall shopping experience and offer more convenience. Customers expressed a desire for features like finding nearby products, viewing their receipt, and knowing how much they saved while shopping, leading to the introduction of the Amazon Dash Cart.

While Amazon is removing the “Just Walk Out” technology from Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., it will continue to be available at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The first cashier-less Amazon grocery store outside the U.S. was opened in London in 2021.
